City of Durham Selected to Receive $400,000 EPA Brownfield Assessment Grant

Summary: The City of Durham was selected on May 8, 2009 to receive a $400,000 EPA Brownfield Assessment grant to target petroleum and hazardous-substance contaminated properties in Northeast Central Durham. This is the second EPA Brownfield Grant received by the City. The first grant was awarded in October 2006 and will be completed by September 30, 2009.

The City of Durham was one of three local governments in North Carolina to be selected for an EPA Brownfield Grant under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. Grant activities will focus on Northeast Central Durham, which has been the target area under the City's current EPA Brownfield Assessment project. Proposed activities to be completed with the new funding include: public involvement, environmental site assessments, and cleanup and redevelopment planning.
