Greenville Grant Winding Down City Preparing to Submit New Grant Applications By Kristen H. Long Friday, September 19, 2008 Summary: The City of Greenville has nearly completed activities associated with it's $200,000 assessment grant. Due to the City's successes in implementing activities under their current grant, they anticipate closing out their grant approximately a year early. What does that mean to those interested in the City's brownfields projects? It means that the City has demonstrated its ability to successfully manage their grant and can build upon those successes as they prepare applications for additional EPA grant funding.
With the assistance of subcontractor CTC, the City completed Phase I Environmental Site Assessments on five properties, and Phase II Environmental Site Assessments on three properties. At two of those Phase II assessments (City Collision and Jeter Auto), the City was able to leverage additional funding by sharing the costs of the environmental work with the developer of the properties.
Site inventory work that was initiated in the City's brownfields pilot project, and built upon through the current grant, has identified many additional properties that require assessment. As such, the City is preparing to apply for an additional $400,000 in funding (for both petroleum and hazardous sites.)
Additionally, the Phase II assessment at the Smart Property revealed that a significant soil removal must take place to ensure the property is safe for future users as well as meet the requirements of the City's voluntary cleanup contract. Therefore, the City is applying for a $200,000 clean-up grant to address the isses at this parcel.
