Fast Facts
- The City of Durham is submitting a $200,000 grant application to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to conduct environmental assessment for properties near the South Alston Avenue area where expansion, redevelopment, or reuse of properties may be complicated by the potential presence of hazardous substances.
- In accordance with the Northeast Central Durham Strategic Revitalization Plan, the City of Durham is working to redevelop several key areas. One of those areas is the South Alston Avenue Area that encompasses the planned Triangle Transit Authority’s Alston Avenue/I-147 train stop. Because this area contains scrap yards, garages, and other businesses with industrial activities, the presence of potentially hazardous substances may be possible.
- According to Christopher Dickey, economic development administrator with the City’s OEED, community involvement is an integral part in these types of projects and is a key factor in the EPA’s evaluation of the grant application. Therefore, public and community-based organizations are encouraged to provide comments and review the draft grant application prior to its submittal to the EPA on December 14, 2005.
