About

Hoke County, North Carolina, received two Brownfields Assessment Grants (one for petroleum constituents and one for hazardous) from the US Environmental Protection Agency in 2008. The overall goal of these grants is to address the concern regarding brownfields throughout Hoke County, North Carolina.

Hoke County's manufacturing industry has been hit hard by globalization and the outsourcing of jobs in recent years which has left behind a large number of vacant and underutilized manufacturing facilities, including textile mills and chemical processing plants with real and perceived environmental contamination (hazardous and/or petroleum) that hinders redevelopment. By assessing the extent of environmental contamination at these sites, the County seeks to begin the process of putting these sites back into productive use to spur economic development and protect the environment.

In addition, as part of the federal government (Department of Defense) Base Realignment and Closure initiative, thousands of soldiers and their families are being relocated to Fort Bragg located in Hoke County. By working closely with the County’s partners, community organizations, developers, state environmental and health agencies and other stakeholders, Hoke County intends to build a strong redevelopment initiative that will work alongside the BRAC program and lead to tangible results for County residents. These expected results include an improved tax base, increased home values, job creation, environmental protection and public health.
